Almost 80 pieces of exceptional student artwork will be on display in Compton Unified School District’s Board Room during the May 23rd Board of Trustees meeting. Visitors will be able to have a sneak peak at what will shown at the District’s STEAMFest the very next day.

The pieces were created by way of an art enrichment program, Meet the Masters, which CUSD introduced this year to promote greater integration of the arts into the classroom. Meet the Masters features curriculum focused on world-renowned master artists. For each artist, students explore the background and specific techniques that made the artist famous and participate in guided instruction and art expression to deepen their understanding of the master artist: First, they view a digital presentation on the history of the artist. Then, they engage in standards-based curriculum that reinforces what students learned. Finally, students replicate the work of art being studied with guidance from a teacher. The students have picked up many artistic skills and knowledge along this journey and have developed an greater love and appreciation for the arts.

Alicia Wyeneth, CUSD Curriculum Specialist and coordinator of the program, is thoroughly impressed by the students. "It is truly amazing seeing the creativity and vibrancy of the art being displayed across the district,” said Wyeneth. “The art and experiences that have manifested from this journey have been nothing but exceptional!"
