2017-2018 COMPTON UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF TRUSTEES ARE SWORN IN, NEW OFFICERS ELECTED, USHERING IN THE NEXT PHASE OF THE COMPTON TURNAROUND

Newly reelected Compton Unified School District (CUSD) Board Members were sworn in during their first December 2017 meeting, in a ceremony officiated by California State Senator Steven Bradford. During the November 7th elections, Compton voters re-elected Alma Taylor-Pleasant, Mae Thomas, Margie N. Garrett, and 2016-17 Board President Satra D. Zurita to another term in service of the students of CUSD.

In heart-felt remarks, Ms. Zurita acknowledged family members present, including Compton Councilmember Janna Zurita, her mother former Compton Councilmember Delores Zurita, and with her daughter and her niece. Recognizing the significance of being a part of a family of civic leaders, the Board President shared, “Today is a great day in Compton and I am so glad to be able to share this special day with the amazing women in my family as we mark another chapter in the Compton Turnaround!”

A list of some of the board accomplishments during Ms. Zurita's term may be found

Ms. Zurita proceeded to nominate the Board’s 2016-17 Vice President Micah Ali to serve as the 2017-18 Board President, who was then elected with a majority vote by fellow board members.

“I’d like to congratulate now President Ali and thank him for his tireless work in successfully moving forward the Compton Turnaround,” Ms. Zurita shared, “And I am happy to be passing the torch to him, as I am confident he will lead us into making an even greater impact in our district and for our students.”

President Ali was first elected to the CUSD Board of Trustees in 2007 and helped spearhead the district’s stabilization efforts that resulted in increased graduation rates, marked school facilities improvements, and the eradication of an almost $40 million dollar budget deficit. He also facilitated the landmark $10 million donation by legendary rapper and entrepreneur, Compton native Andre “Dr. Dre” Young for the construction of a state-of-the-art performing arts complex on the campus of the soon-to-be renovated Compton High School.

The President’s first order of business during the meeting was facilitating the election of the remaining executive officers of the Board, which are noted below:

“As we deepen our efforts to continue to move forward the Compton Turnaround, I encourage each and every teacher, administrator and staff member to make a renewed commitment to give our students their very best,” said the Board President.
