It is with a heavy heart that I share that our beloved champion for children, Margie Garrett, has passed away. Ms. Garrett spent her entire lifetime in service to the children of the Compton Unified School District, having taught in Compton schools and held positions of leadership, including a longtime leadership role with our labor partner, the Compton Education Association.

Ms. Garrett was elected to the Board of Trustees in 2009, and re-elected twice after that - in 2013 and 2017. Ms. Garrett’s career in the District earned her a deep understanding of our community and the important role that education could play in helping to elevate our children.

Ms. Garrett’s devotion to children continued to the very last moment. Knowing that she did not have much time left, Ms. Garrett insisted on fulfilling her role on the Board, even participating in Board meetings remotely, further confirming that her commitment to the community was truly her life’s work.

Above all, Ms. Garrett was a mentor and friend to many, including all of my Board colleagues and myself. I consider it an honor and a privilege to have served alongside Trustee Garrett and I will strive to further her legacy as a courageous leader and agent of positive change.

I have spoken with Ms. Garrett’s family and expressed our condolences and support as a Compton Unified School District family. We will provide further information to staff, families and partners on arrangements and plans to honor Ms. Garrett’s life of service.
