Dear CUSD Family,

On behalf of the Governing Board of Trustees of the Compton Unified School District and myself, thank you. As we close out the 2018-19 school year, we are grateful for the support and hard work of our teachers, administrators, parents, classified staff and partners who collectively made this school year a success.

I truly believe that this year in particular, we have shown the world that we are a district that has turned around, AND we are a district that is elevating on all levels.

This is evidenced by the fact that yesterday, at the beautiful Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, we celebrated the culmination of five high schools for the first time in our history. One of those high schools—Compton Early College—celebrated its first ever graduation ceremony with 100% of its senior class graduating and 100% of them being accepted into four-year universities.

Centennial, Compton, Dominguez, and Chavez/Marshall high schools also all experienced unprecedented achievements this year. All together, over 80% of seniors graduating this year will attend a 2 year or 4 year college or university—a truly outstanding accomplishment.

Our elementary and middle schools also are wrapping up their school year today having made great strides. In fact, 10 of them were recently recognized as among the top schools in the State of California serving low income students. A number of these schools have outperformed the state average insofar as English Language Arts and Math.

We also made a greater commitment to science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM), as evidenced by the over 8,000 people who attended STEAMFest this year, the district being recognized nationally with the RISE Award for its innovative use of technology and project based learning, and with expanded partnerships with Turnaround Arts, Capitol Records and Music Unites.

2018-19 has truly been a year of positive impact. I look forward to our continued work of elevating academics and opportunities for our students and appreciate all of your hard work in bringing this great district to where we are today. Have a safe and joyous summer—we look forward to seeing you in the fall!

Sincerely,

Dr. Darin Brawley, Superintendent
