Alicia Weyeneth, an Administrator of Curriculum and Instruction at Compton Unified School District was recently invited to present at the California Association for the Gifted (CAG) and participated in a Featured Speakers' Panel on how Compton Unified School District is investing in Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) services using LCAP funds.

Ms. Weyeneth oversees the District’s GATE and Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) programs for grades K-8. She has been a strong supporter of pushing students to higher levels as well as integrating visual arts into student learning. The blending of these two areas has produced work for students that is intriguing, interactive, and educational.

Her presentation was on ”Deepening Knowledge through Visual Arts and Technology.” Ms. Weyeneth shared about using art and technology to enhance students’ understanding of certain topics. The purpose of the presentation was to show other educators at the conference how they can use interactive presentation tools to challenge students to think in deeper and more complex ways.

At the conference, Compton Unified School District was called a “model district” for the systems in place for the gifted student population. Ms. Weyeneth will also be presenting to the World Council for Gifted and Talented Children in the Summer.
