55 staff, 11 teams. 12,761.7 pounds, 8 weeks…Who will emerge victorious?

According to the LA County Department of Public Health, 40% of the adults in Compton are obese. This is almost twice the adult obesity percentage for the entire county of Los Angeles. Well, Compton Unified School District staff are determined to fight obesity, starting with themselves.

Staff from across the District have launched their own battle of the bulge, forming 11 teams of 55 people who will compete in the #ElevateHealth weight loss challenge, which is being sponsored by Herbalife. Team members range from teachers to administrators to information technology staff will weigh in every week. The team that has lost the greatest percentage will be named champions of the challenge.

“It is overwhelming the number of people who have signed up to participate and how many people and organizations have stepped up to support the challenge with discounted exercise classes,” said CUSD staff member Tiani Haney. Indeed a host of enthusiastic Compton businesses and other organizations are offering encouragement to the staff throughout the challenge, with nutrition tips, product samples and information.

The district is getting the community in on the action. They hosted a Family Fun Day this past weekend featuring free blood pressure screenings, giveaways, nutrition and health information. Students and staff received blood pressure checks, wellness information, and words of inspiration from American Heart Association representative Papa Joe, who lost 250 pounds by walking and eating healthy on just $40 a week!

President Micah Ali shared his support as well: “The wellbeing of our staff is of utmost importance in the work of serving our children and families. It is outstanding to see them making a commitment to greater health. I am looking forward to seeing everyone in May healthier and stronger.”

The final weigh in for the challenge will be on April 26, 2019 and the winning teams will be recognized at the May 8, 2019 Board meeting, as well as receive cash prizes.

The teams are taking the challenge seriously, complete with team t-shirts and creative team names. Congratulations to all of our teams for taking the important step toward greater health. We wish them the best and look forward to seeing stronger, healthier, happier staff at our school and office sites.

CUSD Superintendent Dr. Brawley, “I am quite proud of our staff for taking the lead and taking this on. Their health is vital in the education of our children and I admire them for taking such a bold first step to elevate it.”
