Each school is one of nearly 300 schools in the county recognized for their work to help students succeed and increase college eligibility.

COMPTON, CA - Nine Compton Unified School District (CUSD) schools are among 300 schools throughout Los Angeles County that are closing the achievement gap for low-income African American and Latino students. The list of schools is published in a new study, L.A. Top Public Schools for Underserved Students, by Innovate Public Schools – Los Angeles, a non-profit committed to helping kids and their families access quality education, and the University of Southern California (USC).

These Top Public Schools are closing the achievement gap by exceeding statewide average scores in English Language Arts and mathematics. Six of the schools ranked within the top 10 schools in their respective categories.

“This is truly a proud moment for these schools and for our district,” said CUSD Superintendent Dr. Darin Brawley, “The achievement of these schools demonstrates our belief that every student can succeed if given the support of a positive school environment, innovative instructional approaches and programs that stretch their abilities.”

In addition to being listed in the report, the nine schools, along with other Top Public Schools were recognized at a special Top Schools L.A.: Leading the Way on Education Equity celebratory event on Saturday, May 4, 2019. The event included a special ceremony and breakout sessions led by education experts.
