Compton Unified School District shifted to meet the changing needs of its student population during the COVID-19 lockdown by providing food boxes totaling over 39,000 pounds to those in most urgent need. Working in partnership with the USDA Farmers to Families Food Box Program and Gold Star Foods, the Compton Unified Student Nutrition Service Department was able to continue to provide much-needed groceries to students’ families during a growing global pandemic.

This innovative meal service highlights the significant role that School Districts play within communities as a focal point for resources. In a letter addressed to Darin Brawley, Ed. D., Superintendent Board of Directors and Ladislao Figueroa, Jr., CUSD Director, Sean C. Leer, Chief Executive Officer of Gold Star Foods wrote, “As you well know, the meals provided in your District are often the only nutrition many of your scholars receive.” .

The letter along with a plaque from Gold Star Foods was sent recognizing CUSD and its Student Nutrition Services Department to memorialize these valiant efforts during such precarious times. It also serves as a reminder of CSUD’s continued commitment to its children and families. CUSD is grateful for this collaborative effort, the resiliency of its staff, and the promptness of the response which enabled the district to meet this urgent community need while keeping everyone safe.
