Who:
9th graders in Compton USD schools and affiliated charters are set to receive high-quality devices with reliable internet connectivity. They include 500 freshmen at Compton’s Dominguez High School, about 100 of whom will receive new Chromebooks at an Oct. 26 drive- and walkthrough event.
Compton USD is one of 52 districts across LA County to benefit from an effort spearheaded by the LA County Office of Education to close the digital divide for students, most of whom are learning from home.
Earlier, the LA County Board of Supervisors approved LACOE’s proposal to allocate $12.5 million in federal coronavirus relief funds to purchase computer devices and internet connectivity for students in need.
What:
Of the $12.5 million countywide allocation, Compton USD has received some $1.1 million in devices, including 2,000 Chromebooks and 1,500 iPads as well as hotspots for internet connectivity.

Why:
With most LA County students learning from home, a computer device and internet connectivity are now basic school supplies. The effort helps historically underserved children and families who do not have technology access at home. As some online instruction is expected to continue, all students deserve the necessary tools to learn effectively and prepare for college and careers beyond the pandemic.
