Lunch Hero Day

COMPTON, CA - Between preparing healthy food, adhering to strict nutrition standards, navigating student food allergies, and offering service with a smile, Compton Unified School District nutrition professionals have a lot on their plate. To celebrate their hard work and commitment, CUSD schools is celebrating School Lunch Hero Day today. This day, celebrated annually since 2013, was designated by The School Nutrition Association and Jarrett Krosoczka, author of the Lunch Lady graphic novel series. School Lunch Hero Day provides an opportunity for parents, students, school staff and communities to thank those who provide healthy meals to nearly 30 million of Americas students each school day.

"Our Student Nutrition Services staff play an important role in making sure Compton scholars are supported in their educational journey by making sure they are nourished and ready to learn," said Superintendent Darin Brawley.

CUSD's Student Nutrition Services staff have distributed approximately 135,860 snacks, 132,862 suppers, 298, 940 lunches, and 258,359 breakfasts since the beginning of the school year.

"School nutrition employees must balance many rules and follow numerous federal, state and local regulations to ensure safe and healthy meals are available in schools. School Lunch Hero Day provides the opportunity for the community to thank these hardworking heroes" said Student Nutrition Services Senior Director, Ladislao Figueroa.

Federal nutrition standards ensure that school cafeterias always offer low-fat or fat-free milk, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein. School meals also meet limits on calories, sodium and unhealthy fats.

The importance and nutritional value of school meals are well documented. For many children, school lunch is the most important and nutrient-rich meal of their day. Since the pandemic, CUSD's School Nutrition Services staff have reported to work on site for the operation and administration of our meal programs without pausing service.

Following USDA's meal flexibility waivers, they supported the district in continuing to offer meals to all Compton children who are 18 years of age and younger at no-cost to them regardless of CUSD student enrollment status. Furthermore, they distributed thousands of donated meals from private and non-profit organizations. and thousands of pounds under USDA's Farmers to Families Food Box program.

"A hallmark of a hero is a steadfast commitment to serving others, even when it is difficult or when most of the work involved in serving is not seen. Our Student Nutrition Services staff are such heroes, and their contribution to the health, wellbeing, and education journey of our students is undeniable. We are honored to honor them on this day."
