Elevate Academics

Under the leadership of Superintendent Dr. Darin Brawley, the Compton Unified School District has emerged from a dramatic turnaround. Our schools have undergone transformation marked by a significant increase in student achievement rates, a graduation rate nearing 90%, facilities improvements, and a focus on STEM throughout all schools.

This is just the start of Compton’s success story. We’re continuing to #elevate academics throughout every school in the district setting the bar high for student achievement.

Project Based Learning

CUSD schools are committed to providing an equitable education for all students by providing personalized classroom settings that support Project Based Learning. In order to provide more equitable outcomes, Compton Unified developed a blended learning classroom model that combines personalized learning using adaptive computer programs with real world learning opportunities through problem solving found in PBL. This model, Data Driven Blended Learning +PBL, is designed to embrace the diversity of all Compton students including our high percentage of ELL students, and provides innovations in support of equity and transforms learning for all students.

Digital Promise – League of Innovative Schools

Digital Promise’s League of Innovative Schools connects and rallies the most forward-thinking leaders of the nation’s school districts. Since 2016, CUSD has been honored to be one of the League members that represent 102 districts and 33 states, and their experiences reflect the diversity and shared challenges of public education in America. By working together on shared priorities – and partnering with leading entrepreneurs, researchers, and education leaders – League districts pioneer innovative learning and leadership practices that lead to improved outcomes for students and that prepare them to compete at the highest level in the global marketplace.

Project Lead the Way

Project Lead the Way (PLTW) provides innovative programming in computer science, engineering, and biomedical science that can be found district-wide. These classes, which emphasize hands-on activities, projects, and problems, provide students with the opportunity to solve real-world challenges that empower them to be innovators and impact the world around them. Compton USD middle schools have PLTW Gateway courses like Biomedical Detectives, Automation and Robotics, Design and Modeling, and Computer Science for Innovators. High schools offer complete pathways that include PLTW courses in Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Technology, Civil Engineering & Architecture, and Robotics. Finally, PLTW Launch programs are being developed in elementary schools as students in those schools are introduced to engineering, computer science, and biomedical science at early grades, preparing them to be the technology leaders of tomorrow.

Apple Partnership – Apple ConnectED Grant

The partnership with Apple commenced in 2014 when five Compton schools (Bursch, Carver, Jefferson, Kelly and Walton Middle) received the ConnectED grant. Apple donated an iPad to every student to provide them access to technology in the classroom. In addition, Apple has provided ongoing planning and professional learning, so all five schools can experience the transformational power of technology. After the conclusion of the grant, Apple has continued its partnership with Compton schools by hosting professional learning opportunities at the local Apple store and participating in the Everyone Can Code events during Computer Science Education Week.

Verizon Innovative Learning Schools Grant

Compton Unified School District garnered the Verizon Innovative Learning Grant for four middles schools: Bunche, Davis, Enterprise and Roosevelt. This grant provided 1.8 million to the district by providing these schools with iPads for each student, free internet access, and hands-on learning experiences to help increase STEM education for students. Powered by a next-gen, technology-infused curriculum that fundamentally changes the way teachers teach and students learn, Verizon Innovative Learning gave Compton students the ability to do more in this world.
To achieve more. To learn more. To create more.
