WHAT IS THE OVERWATCH COMPTON UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT eSPORTS HIGH SCHOOL TOURNAMENT?

The Overwatch Compton Unified School District eSports High School Tournament is video gaming competition between Centennial, Compton, Compton Early College, and Dominguez High Schools. It is a college and career readiness initiative to help students turn their passion into a career pathway. The Program is conducted in partnership with the College and Career Readiness Department within Compton Unified School District. Compton Unified School District has contracted The Carrot Group to develop and run the Tournament and Championship. The goals of the eSports program are:

• To develop students’ Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) skills while reinforcing 21st century skills such as collaboration, digital literacy, critical thinking, and problem-solving,
• To educate students about computer programming and the various career opportunities within the video game industry,
• To foster and encourage gameplay in accordance with the highest tradition of sportsmanship and consistent with the general objectives of education.

Each student team will be comprised of six players and one alternate. Teams at each school will play each other, with the best team from the top two schools facing each other in a live Championship.

WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT?

• One optional practice session per week.
• Play an approximately 60-minute match online after school once a week for four weeks.
• Attend a 2-hour facilitated off-campus Orientation and Career Pathway session from education partners.
• If they qualify, attend a 2-hour live Championship event on Tuesday, December 10, 2019.

WHAT IS eSPORTS?

Also known as electronic sports, eSports is a form of team competition that is facilitated through computer gaming. Most commonly, eSports takes the form of organized, multiplayer online video game competitions. These competitions often incorporate live broadcasts with commentary and award trophies and prizes to the winning competitors. eSports is also one of the fastest growing sports in the world and offers many exciting jobs opportunities. Because the gameplay is online, a team does not need to be in the same room to compete. eSports are 100% gender and American Disabilities Act neutral, offering a completely level playing field to all who want to compete, regardless of their physical attributes or limitations.

WHAT IS OVERWATCH?

Overwatch is a popular video game developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. The game is rated T (Content is generally suitable for ages 13 and up. May contain violence, suggestive themes, crude humor, minimal blood, simulated gambling and/or infrequent use of strong language) by the Entertainment Software Rating Board. Overwatch is an animated first-person shooter in which players join an international task force trying to restore peace to the world. Players use a variety of firearms (e.g., pistols, machine guns), arrows, and futuristic weapons (e.g., laser blasters) to attack enemies in team combat objectives. Every player will need to create an account on Battle.net in order to access the Tournament.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

Any students enrolled in good academic standing at Centennial, Compton, Compton Early College, and Dominguez High Schools and meet the player requirements.

ARE THERE COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH PLAYING?

No. There are no costs associated with signing up and playing. If a student does not have access to a computer with the proper system, requirements, he/she can play their matches at a facility with other team members on computers provided by the District.
