One Compton Unified Elementary School and Two Compton Unified Middle School Robotics Teams have advanced to compete in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League Robotics Championship in La Canada, CA on December 9, 2017. These teams will face off with 45 other teams from the Los Angeles region.
The three Compton teams are ‘Jefferson Hydrobots,’ from Jefferson Elementary School; ‘Roosevelt Lionbotics 1,’ an all-boys’ team from Roosevelt Middle School; ‘Roosevelt Lionbotics 2,’ an all-girls team, also from Roosevelt Middle School.
The program in Compton was launched by the District’s Compton Robotics Club, which recruited and coached the teams. Project challenges are provided by FIRST Lego Robotics and call on teams to design and present a robot in response to a real-world solution to a problem around a theme. This year’s theme was hydrodynamics.
“We are very proud of these dedicated student engineers, who have demonstrated commitment, innovation and teamwork,” said CUSD Superintendent Darin Brawley. “They are great examples of the value of our district’s commitment to deepening access to STEAM activities and programs for all our students.”
The students have been working for several months on their robots and presentations, enthusiastically coming together even during Thanksgiving break. When asked how does he feel his team will do at the championship, one student remarked, “If we work together as a team and stick to our core values, I think we will do well.”
The program in Compton was launched in partnership with the Compton Robotics Club, a non-profit group which mentors the teams and teacher-coaches. Project challenges call on teams to design, build, and program a robot using LEGOs to solve missions on a playing field as well as to design an innovative solution to a real-world problem around a theme. This year's theme was hydrodynamics.
programs for all our students.”
“It is truly a great day in Compton Unified!” said CUSD Board President Satra Zurita. “Our students are intelligent, curious and STEAM-inspired with bright futures ahead of them.”
