Compton – September 8, 2017 – We want to enthusiastically salute Sloane Stephens outstanding victory in the U.S. Open over her more experienced opponent, Venus Williams! We could not be more excited about Sloan's victory for what it means to her career and to women's tennis. Long before her victory at the US Open, Sloane Stephens, has been a champion for the youth of Compton. Over the past few years, she has become an integral part in bringing back tennis to our schools. Compton Unified School District also wants to recognize and thank her for the work she and her Sloan Stephens Foundation has done with students in Compton Unified School District. She has donated equipment, staff, and time; and has helped create tennis courts on many of our elementary schools. She has actually played with our children as they've learned to enjoy tennis. "We hope she wins the U.S. Open, but she is already a Humanitarian Champion in Compton Unified and the city of Compton," said President of the Board, Satra Zurita. Being a non-contact sport, tennis is one of the safest sports for children to participate in. At Compton Unified School District we believe in the many benefits, both physical and social/emotional, that result from youth tennis.
