All 3 CUSD Boys' Basketball Teams Go to the CIF-SS Playoffs!

With all three Compton Unified School District boys’ basketball teams competing in the CIF-Southern Sectional playoffs this week, could it be that athletics in Compton are back?

Superintendent Dr. Darin Brawley will tell you that it has never left…it just received a face lift.

On Valentine’s Day, at 7:00 pm, Centennial High School, Compton High School and Dominguez High School Boys’ Basketball teams will all be competing in the CIF Southern Sectional playoffs, having all had successful seasons in the highly competitive sport. Centennial will play Flintridge Prep, Compton will play Diamond Ranch, and Dominguez has a home game against Windward.

Centennial, Compton and Dominguez high schools have enjoyed a long tradition of strong athletics programs and athletic talent, producing professional baseball, basketball and football players who have gone on to achieve greatness in sports.

"Some of the most amazing talent have come through our doors," shared JaMaiia Bond, who oversees the district's various sports programs, "We are proud to have been home to many scholar athletes."

That is why, upon becoming being appointed superintendent of CUSD, Dr. Brawley set out to invest in athletic facilities throughout the district, which were in disrepair and in need of upgrades. "Our students deserve beautiful facilities for learning and for recreation-and that includes sports facilities," said Dr. Brawley, "We have great talent here-let's give them great spaces to cultivate that talent in while they learn."

CUSD Board of Trustees Vice President and an alum of Compton public schools Satra Zurita agrees about the importance of athletics, "Having cheered on our athletes at many a game, I know the great pride and community cohesiveness our sports programs yield, especially when they advance to championships!"

Since then, the district has made dramatic improvements to many of its athletic facilities, with more to come. Below is a list of such improvements, as well as those planned.
