TK - 6 TH Graders Will Return on Hybrid Schedule

Vaccination Clinic for District Staff opens March 9

COMPTON (March 2, 2021) – The Compton Unified School District announced today that students in grades 3 through 6 who wish to return to school can do so beginning Monday, March 8th and students in grades TK through 2nd will return beginning Monday, March 15th. It is hoped that students in grades 7 through 12 will be able to return to campuses shortly after case rates in Los Angeles County fall into the red tier.

In addition, all District staff who wish to be vaccinated from the coronavirus can receive their shots beginning on Tuesday, March 9th, at Clinton Elementary School, 6500 E. Compton Blvd. The clinic, in partnership with St. John's Child and Well Child and Family Center, will be providing voluntary drive-thru vaccinations for staff and community members by appointment Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

“Our goal is to have every staff member who wants to be vaccinated receive a shot,” said President Micah Ali. “We are finalizing the details now and are making preparations to open the registration this week.”

Students who wish to return to school will attend class in small cohorts on either Tuesdays and Wednesdays, or Thursdays and Fridays, with students who need/want specialized support having the option of also attending on Mondays. Students participating in this hybrid model will continue with distance learning on the days they are not on campus. According to parent surveys, about half of CUSD’s families have expressed an interest in returning to campus. Parents will continue to have the option of having their children attend classes via distance-learning for the remainder of the school year.

Safety protocols including sanitizing, desk barriers and social-distancing requirements will remain in effect, meaning classroom sizes of approximately 14 students with up to two supporting adults including teachers. Also beginning next week, the District will offer Antigen COVID-19 testing (rapid) pilot for all staff and students at Clinton Elementary, thanks to a partnership with the California Department of Public Health, and expand to additional elementary schools through the rest of the month.

Currently, campuses in CUSD are open to small cohorts of preschool and TK through 12th grade students for whom distance learning has been particularly challenging, such as students in special education programs, English language learners, and students with significant academic needs.

School sites within the District will be hosting virtual meetings with parents and guardians this week to answer questions and make sure they have a clear picture of what to expect.
