Message From Superintendent Darin Brawley Regarding Reopening Of Schools

July 17, 2020

Compton Unified School District Board will reopen the school year with distance learning. A resolution (spanish) outlining the decision was passed at a special meeting of the Board of Trustees.

Today, Governor Gavin Newsom ordered all school campuses to remain closed for in class instruction of students in counties on the state’s monitoring list due to spiking COVID-19 cases. This includes Los Angeles County. Schools cannot re-open campuses until their county has come off the state’s monitoring list for 14 consecutive days. Therefore, this order will mean that all Compton schools, including before- and after-school activities, all athletic and extracurricular practices and competitions, and all weekend events will be closed until LA County has met that requirement.

This decision was made in light of recent surges in the transmission of COVID-19 within Los Angeles County communities, including Compton. Our decision is also in alignment with guidance from the Executive Order of the Governor of California, the California Department of Public Health and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

In addition to following the Governor’s orders, we made this decision with the goal of protecting the health, safety and well-being of our students and employees, while ensuring we provide access to a quality education.

Our distance learning plan will consist of classroom teachers providing instruction to students via distance learning platforms. We understand that distance learning may be challenging for students and families, and will be spending the next few weeks working hard to ensure that every student is provided digital devices to assist them in accessing an engaging and authentic learning experience.

We will keep our CUSD community informed every step of the way, including hosting a series of virtual town hall meetings for parents beginning Thursday, July 23rd. We have also launched a website where we will post updates, notices, important links and other information as we approach the new school year: www.compton.k12.ca.us/reopen.

Thank you for partnering with us to make sure Compton scholars have every opportunity for a healthy and successful new school year.
